Annie Gay Self

Decatur

Annie Gay Self was born on September 5,1917, in Town Creek, Alabama, the daughter of James Alva Jeffreys and Mattie Roberson Landers Jeffreys. Mrs. Self was preceded in death by three brothers; and four sisters. She is survived by her sister, Marjorie Jo Syna, Melborne, Florida.

Funeral services will be today at 3 p.m. at Ridout's Brown Service Funeral Home, Decatur, with The Reverand Earl Holt officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Special songs will be provided by Boyce McCutcheon and music by Mary Virginia Roan. Burial will be at Decatur City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and son-in-laws.

Mrs. Self worked as a bookkeeper for the JCPenney Company for many years. She was a Charter Member of Memorial Baptist Church and spent many years serving as a Sunday School Teacher and member of the WMU. After retirement, she did volunteer office work for Hospice.

Although she was an avid golpher, her favorite pastime was enjoying time with her family and cooking fabulous meals. She was always reading and loved to watch Jeopardy. She was a member of the Mizpah Chapter #19, Order of the Eastern Star, and was a Past Worthy Matron. In 2011, she was honored with a banquet and presented with a 50 year membership pin.

Mrs. Self was 95 years old at the time of her death. She lived her lifetime in Decatur. Her death occurred at her home, with family present. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, I.E. Self, former Postmaster of Decatur. Surviving children are, Peggy Self McLemore (Ted), Athens, Jack E. Self (Gail), Decatur, and Janice Self Putnam (Cliff), Decatur; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Our loving Mother, Grandmother, sister, and friend, filled our lives with a magnitude of sweet memories and blessed joy, and she will forever live in our hearts.

Special love and thanks to her wonderful and dedicated caregiver, Diana Lee Schrim. And much gratitude for the gentle care given to her and family by Hospice.
