Aubrey McCleary Gaskins, 85, of Florence passed away April 12, 2014.
Visitation will be Friday, April 18, 2014, at Elkins Funeral Home from 5:30-8 PM. Funeral services will be at Highland Baptist Church Saturday, April 19, 2014, at 1 PM, with Bro. Rick Marshall officiating. He will lie in state at the church from 12-1 PM. Burial will be at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens.
He was born in Ooltewah, Tennessee November 22, 1928 and grew up in Memphis where he graduated from Humes High School in 1946. He attended North Texas State University before serving as Minister of Music at Berclair Baptist Church in Memphis from 1952-1968. He then moved to Tupelo, Mississippi where he was Minister of Music at Harrisburg Baptist Church from 1968-1975 and then to Florence where he served at Highland Baptist Church from 1975-1993. After retirement one of his favorite pastimes was serving as the greeter at his son''s restaurant, Stephano''s. He was involved with the Renaissance Faire since its inception and particularly enjoyed planning the Renaissance Feast for the Round Table every year.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years Thelma Crone Gaskins; two sons, Mack Gaskins of Huntsville and Steve Gaskins of Sheffield; one daughter, Bobsy Ingram and her husband Bill of Huntsville. Also surviving him are nine grandchildren including Jane Meigs (Keith), Eliza Ingram, Rebecca Gaskins, Caroline Ingram, Sam Gaskins, Melissa Gaskins, Rachel Gaskins, Wilson Gaskins, and Emma Grace Gaskins. He had two great-grandchildren, Bennett Meigs and Hadley Gaskins.
He was preceded in death by his parents R.B. and Lottie Gaskins and a half brother, R.B. Gaskins, Jr.
