Funeral for Clarion Lee Carroll, 88, of Mount Hope will be Friday, April 22, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Mount Hope Baptist Church with Bro. Ricky Watt, Bro. Jack Bailey and Bro. Jonathan Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Ferguson Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 8 at Elliott Funeral Home.
Mr. Carroll, who died Tuesday, April 19, 2011, was born November 16, 1922, in Limestone County to Alfred Lawson Carroll and Jeanette Hinkle Carroll. Mr. Carroll worked in the CCC program during the Great Depression in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was drafted into World War II and spent most of his time in New Guinea and the Fiji Islands as a medical technician staff sergeant. In 2009, Mr. Carroll went to Washington D.C. on the World War II Honor Flight. He was in the documentary 'Still Standing" which is about World War II. Mr. Carroll was retired from Bowman Transportation Co. and Belbro Auto Parts. He loved to hunt, fish and woodworking crafts. He was a member of Mount Hope Baptist Church and the Mount Hope Senior Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Burton Carroll, Bobby Carroll and Dean Carroll; and sister, Wilma Carroll Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Carroll; two sons, Stephen Carroll (Beverly) of Gainesville, Fla., and Darwin Speake of Town Creek; five daughters, Chella Carroll Hall (Mitch) of Hatton, Cheryl Speake Sanders (John) of Town Creek, Melanie Speake Epperson (Scott) of Benson, N.C., Barbara Carroll Fitzgerald (Mack) of Vinemont and Martha Carroll Field (Jerry) of Petersburg, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; sister, Elnora Carroll Morris of Neal; sister-in-law, Joyce Denmon Carroll of Athens and brothers-in-law, A.L. Smith of Toney and James McCoy Stokes of Town Creek.
Pallbearers will be Barry Carroll, Billy Morris, Forrest Garrison, Joe Hargrove, Ray Sherrill, Johnny Raby, Dennis Gilbreath and Mike Parker.
Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Bowman Transporation and the Mount Hope Baptist Senior Adult Sunday school class.
