Obituary

Cletus H. Quick
Decatur
Cletus H. Quick, 84, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2009, at Veterans Hospice Hospital in Tuscaloosa. A private memorial service will be held Saturday, May 9, 2009, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry Greer and the Rev. Ian Butler officiating. Burial will be in the church columbarium. Mr. Quick attended Huntsville High School and The University of Alabama. He married Netta Henrietta Kirkley on July 3, 1943. Three weeks later, he joined the Army with assignments in Belgium and Manila. His career in radio began in 1941. A pioneer in the industry, he owned and operated stations in Haleyville, Corinth, Miss., Oxford, Miss., Muscle Shoals and Dyersburg, Tenn. He is best known for his Decatur Station, WMSL. He focused his volunteer work throughout the city. He was a Rotarian, president of the Decatur Convention and Visitors Bureau, president of Alabama Mountain Lakes Association, and Governor Fob James appointed him to the advisory board for Alabama State Tourism. Because of his love for his city and its programs, he joined with the Chamber of Commerce in establishing a Tourism Board. His first idea was not only for out of town guests but to give activities for those in the community creating the "Alabama Jubilee" and "Spirit of America." Those two events are still Decatur's largest attractions. In 1978, the Decatur Civitan Club honored him with it's Good Citizen Award. He is survived by one sister, Frances Eva Case of Huntsville; two daughters, Lynn and Ann Quick; one grandson, John V. Lyons III of Birmingham; and two great-grandsons, Thomas Catania and Connor Lyons. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Netta Faye. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Columbarium Fund. Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home is directing.
