Funeral for Clyde Brown Smith, 91, of Decatur will be today, June 18, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home with Alan Watkins and Jere Spurlin officiating. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service with burial in Roselawn Cemetery.
Mr. Smith, who died Saturday, June 15, 2013, at Decatur Morgan Hospital, was born June 25, 1921, to James Matthew Smith and Bessie Hall Smith. While in high school, he played several sports excelling in football under Coach "Shorty" Ogle. Later, he was a member of the group known as "Shorty's Boys." Following high school, he served his country as a sergeant in the 346th Squadron 350th Fighter Group in the Army Air Forces from August 1942 until Honorably discharged in August of 1945. He was employed at Wolverine Tube for 36 years.
He is survived by his children, Victor Clyde Smith (Lin) of Athens, Ginger Smith Spurlin (Jere) of Decatur and Mindy Kay Myers (Chris) of Pensacola, Fla.; four grandchildren, Kerry Beth Hill (Jonathan) of Athens, William Tyler Spurlin of Hoover, Kathryn Spurlin Terry (Jonathan) of Trinity and Erin Gayle Smith (Nicolas) of Madison; three great-grandchildren, Ava Rose Hill, Evan James Hill of Athens, Charlie David Smith of Madison. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Moviline Biggerstaff Smith; his parents, James Matthew Smith and Bessie Hall Smith; five brothers, Charlie C. Smith, James Matthew Smith, John Lester Smith, George Edward Smith and Guye Raymond Smith; one sister, Pearl Smith Wright; and several nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all his loved ones and friends.
Pallbearers will be family members. Honorary pallbearers are Charles Riley and the Shorty's Boys.
