Obituary

Dickie Wayne Sledge, 1944-2011, died November 20th at his home. Mr. Sledge was a member of the IBEW for 45 years and was one of the first Alaska pipeline workers. He served in the US Navy aboard the USS Shaingri-La and was a Vietnam Veteran. He retired from Redstone Arsenal in 2006. He enjoyed Nascar, dirt track racing, and fast cars. He is survived by his mother, Lillian Hendrix of Florence; his wife Sandra of Killen; his son Phillip of Atlanta; daughter Lucinda Burchel and husband Kevin of Decatur; and two wonderful grandsons Berek and Bowen Burchel. He will be missed by many friends at "the shop" where he worked, gardened, and entertained friends after his retirement. A memorial service will be Tuesday, November 22, 2011, 6PM at Elkins East Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service until 8PM. Brother Bobby Walton, friend and co-worker will officiate. If anyone would like to share a story contact Bobby Walton.
