Mr. Donald L. Wallace, Sr., 89, of Florence, passed away Friday, October 30, 2009 at Mitchell-Hollingsworth Nursing and Rehab Center.
The funeral service will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Elkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gary Formby officiating. Burial will follow in Greenview Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 12:30 p.m. until service time.
Mr. Wallace was preceded in death by a son, Donald L. Wallace, Jr. and his wife, Ellen Bass Wallace.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was retired from TVA. For many years he served as Adjutant, American Legion Post #11 where he was a very effective advocate for veterans and American Legion programs including Boys and Girls State.
He was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church and the Men''s Bible Class and was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.
Mr. Wallace is survived by a son, Richard H. Wallace and wife Mary Ann, Killen; daughter-in-law, Laurie Wallace, McLean, Virginia; grandchildren, Lanie Reynolds and husband Robert, Birmingham, Bass Wallace, Madison, Alabama, Laurelie Wallace and Katherine Wallace, both of McLean, Virginia; great-grandchildren, Cole and Anna Reynolds; brothers, A.J. Wallace and wife Myra, Florence, and Clarence L. Wallace, Nashville, Tennessee.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Griffin, Larry Mack Smith, Jerry Dowd, Harry Wallace, Bill Coussons, and Dick Jordan. Honorary pallbearers will be Neal Johnson, Oscar Davis, Chester Lawrence, and David Musselman.
