Funeral for Doris Cowan Foster Lipscomb, 92, of Decatur will be today, March 20, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Ridout's Brown-Service Chapel with Dr. Terry Greer and Scott Lawrence officiating. Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery.
Mrs. Lipscomb, who died Thursday, March 17, 2011, at Valley View Rehabilitation, was born July 16, 1918, in Lawrence County to J Cooper Cowan and Gertrude Cowan. At an early age, she and her family moved to Limestone County on a farm during the Great Depression. She attended schools in Tanner, Athens College and Montevallo College where she graduated in 1940. She taught school three 1/2 years in Vernon and Town Creek. Later, she worked as a secretary at Huntsville Arsenal in the engineering department until the war was over. She then became a secretary at Decatur Trade School. There she met Greene B. Foster, the diesel and heavy equipment instructor. They had nearly 50 years of happy marriage until his death in December 1998. Later, she married W.O. Lipscomb Jr., a retiree of Raf Meat Packing Co. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors are one daughter, Betty Ann Wharton and her husband, Kenneth, of Decatur; two grandsons, Scott Lawrence and Michael Lawrence, both of Madison; one stepdaughter, Susan Baughn and her husband, Tim, and stepgrandson, Thomas Baughn of Decatur
