Dorothy Gist passed peacefully from this life on January 13, 2025 at the age of 99 at Lauderdale Christian Nursing home where she was a beloved resident.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Jerre Gist (Linda); grandchildren, Tracy Perry (Terry), Amy Stubbs (Ray), Melissa Lyle, Jamie Hillis (Rachel), Brianna Maharrey (Trey); Great Grandchildren Elizabeth Arledge (Stone), Daniel Stubbs (Kayla), Chandler Stubbs (Devon), Anna Lyle (Aaron Mashburn), Cooper Maharrey, Parker Maharrey; Great-Great Grandchildren; Halle Arledge, Brett Arledge, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents; loving husband, DC Gist; son, Danny Gist; special daughter in law, Ann Hillis.
Dorothy was born December 26, 1925 to Dewey and Laura Johnson of Greenhill, AL. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She loved where she lived and spent her life serving the community through Gist Body Shop in Florence that she and DC owned for a number of years as well as serving through her church, Greenhill United Methodist. She was a woman of many talents but sitting still was not one of them. She was a beautiful and vibrant woman so full of life, love and wisdom. You could find her making meals for the sick, visiting church members, tending to their garden, cutting grass, cleaning house and loving her family and friends. She always had enough time and energy to go around for all those who needed her. Her kind, genuine and generous spirit made her magnetic, drawing people to her effortlessly. She had so many roles and so many names and whether you knew her as Dorothy, Grandmother Dorothy, Mam or Dot Dot you knew that you were in the presence of a special lady and you knew you were loved. Through the many challenges she experienced in life she never wavered in her dignity, courage and faithfulness to God. Her legacy will live on through her family and many friends that were blessed to be in her life. She was a joy to know, love and care for and will be so deeply missed.
The family extends its heartfelt thanks to Lauderdale Christian Nursing home and their entire staff for the phenomenal care she received in her time there. With special thanks to her late in life blessing of a precious Resident Assistant turned best buddy Taylor Beene. She brought so much joy and love into Dorothy's life this past year and for that we are forever grateful for the smile your presence brought to her face. To her special friends who have continued to visit regularly you are a treasure and we thank you for loving her so well.
