Born in Lawrence County to Nannie Simms Shelton and George Parker Shelton, she was a lifelong resident of Moulton. She graduated from LCHS and entered Florence State Teachers College (now UNA) where she earned B.S., M.A. and Ed.S degrees. She was chosen for membership in Phi Kappa Phi honor society. She was a member of the College band and was accompanist for college choir for two years.Dorris was a proud member of Moulton Baptist Church having taught various Bible study classes and serving as pianist and organist for 50 years. She enjoyed out-of-state mission trips with her church group. She was a past member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a present member of Joe Wheeler Chapter No. 291 United Daughters of the Confederacy (past chaplain) and the Daughters of the American Revolution (Regent). She was very proud of her American heritage as evidenced by her participation in many chapter activities for both organizations.Dorris was chosen by the Civitans as Lawrence County Education of the Year in 1963. She was the first teacher in Lawrence County who taught Advanced Placement classes when that program was innovative. She loved her students for 40 years of teaching.She was the loving wife of Don Chitwood for 53 years. She is survived by two sons, Bobby Chitwood and William Shelton Chitwood; one daughter, Lorie Bailey, wife of Gerald Bailey; and two grandsons, Jay-Jay and Caleb Bailey.Service will be at Moulton Baptist Church today at 2 p.m. The body will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens with Elliott Funeral Home directing. -
