Obituary

Herbert Clay Barnett, age 90, of Florence, passed away comfortably at his residence on Tuesday, January 5, 2010.
The funeral service will be Friday at 3:00 p.m. at the Elkins Funeral Home Chapel. Charles Abernathy will officiate. Burial will follow in Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until service time.
Herb was born in Lexington and grew up in the OK community near Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. He served in the US Army and US Navy during World War II and then made St. Clair Shores, Michigan his home. He worked at Jim''s Hair Cutting Shop in Grosse Point, Michigan and was a member of North Warren Church of Christ, Warren, Michigan.
In 1976 he moved to Florence and established Herb''s Hair Cutting Shop. He became a member of Darby Drive Church of Christ and was a song leader and a benevolent church worker, always helping others. He later became a member of Woodlawn Church of Christ and is a current member of Chisholm Hills Church of Christ. He retired in 1994.Herb took pride in cooking pancakes at the Killen Senior Citizens breakfasts and had been an ECM volunteer for eleven years.
He was a gardener, fisherman, woodworker and handyman and enjoyed quartet singing.
Herb is survived by his wife Carolyn Minor Barnett; children Ron Barnett, McDonough, Georgia, and Sherry Barnett Butler, Florence; step-children Steve Minor, Birmingham, Cindy Graybartz and husband Ray, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin and Laurie Estes and husband Chris, Biloxi, Mississippi; grandchildren Tammy Barnett Ard and husband Scott, McDonough, Georgia, Steve Barnett, Stockbridge, Georgia and Missy Barnett, California; great-grandchildren Kevin, Jason, and Amy Ard; sister Leatie Mae Killen, Etheridge, Tennessee; forty-one nieces and nephews, and a good friend Jimmy Hills.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Nettie West Barnett, a son Herbert Brent Barnett, parents Bosco and Frances "Fannie Lou" Barnett, brothers Thomas, Lecil, Robert, and Loyce Barnett; sisters Claty Thompson, Flora Hand, and Dorothy Nutt; friend Bill Partain.
Pallbearers will be Steve Barnett, James Goode, Jimmy Hills, Scott Ard, Clifford Miles, David Willis and Jason Putman. David Underwood will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
The family would like to thank Mary Keeler and Curt Kloosterman, Dr. Richard Cunningham and staff Kathy and Brenda, Mid South Home Health, especially Joey, Angela, Traci and Gina, Glenwood Rehab nurse Margaret Seaton; Janet Smith and Lucy from Glenwood the Hilltop, friends James and Ellen Goode and Sandra Richey.
