Herschel Neil "Doc" May, Jr., of Florence died Monday, December 12, 2011. He was 50.
The visitation was Thursday evening at Elkins Funeral Home The graveside service, with military honors, was Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Greenview Cemetery with Frank Mills officiating. Elkins Funeral Home assisted the family.
"Doc" was a native of Florence wand was a graduate of Coffee High School, class of 1979. He earned his bachelor''s degree in Political Science from the University of North Alabama where he received a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army. He was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. "Doc" retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after twenty-one years of distinguished and honorable service. Following his retirement, he was the inaugural instructor for the JROTC program at Florence High School where he touched many lives. Most recently, he held a civilian position at Redstone Arsenal as the Current Intelligence Chief for the Aviation and Missile Command, G2. "Doc" was a respected leader of men, with a strong sense of integrity and an unwavering dedication to duty. His patriotism could only be rivaled by his love of family and friends. "Doc" will be deeply missed by all.
He is survived by a daughter Lindsey Katherine May of Florence; sons Herschel Neil May III and wife Vicki of Jacksonville, AL and Kyle Andrew May and wife Amy of Colorado Springs, CO; a grandchild Ethan Neil May; his mother Deedie May of Florence; sisters Brenda May Goodwin and husband Byrom of Huntsville, Teresa Dianne Bevis of Florence, Sherry May Chase of Rogersville, Mona May Isom and husband Rusty of Hampton Cove; brother Kevin Paul May of Florence; nieces and nephews Griffin Byrom Goodwin, Anna Goodwin Settle, Whitney Rebekah Evans, Chappell Hannah Evans, Sara Katherine Isom and Adam Tyler Isom.
Honorary pallbearers were Colonel Parker Schenecker, Senator Brett Guthrie, Marold Pigg , John Glasscock, John Chase and Griffin Goodwin.
