Mrs. Hilda Elkins Shelton, 98, a familiar face in the Lawrence County Courthouse in the 1960s and 1970s died August 11, 2011, at Decatur Health and Rehab, following an extended illness. She would have been 99 on October 23, 2011.
Mrs. Shelton's kindness and helpful attitude made her a favorite among the thousands of visitors at the courthouse during her 22 years of service there. She worked in the Circuit Clerk's office with her husband, the late Ernest Shelton, who served 30 years as circuit clerk. She and her husband retired together in 1976.
Visitation for Mrs. Shelton will be today August 13, 2011, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church near Moulton from 10:30 a.m. until noon with a service following at noon at the church with the Reverend Steve Agee officiating. Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens with Elliott Funeral Home directing.
She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church for which her son Jackie served as pastor for 25 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest; her daughter, Martha Smith; son-in-law, Walter B. Smith; her parents, Percy and Mattie Elkins; and two brothers, Raymond Wear Elkins and William Forrest Elkins.
Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Jackie Shelton and wife, Ben-Ann, of Muscle Shoals and Bill Shelton and wife, Avonne, of Decatur; two daughters, Betty Sue Smith and Jeanne Hurst, both of Decatur; one brother, James Edward Elkins of Muscle Shoals; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grand- children, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Mike Smith, Stuart Shelton, Brett Shelton, Ben Shelton, Brad Shelton, Ray McKelvey, Steve Smith and Josh Hurst.
The family request donations to the Walter B. Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Baptist Foundation of Alabama, P.O. Box 241227, Montgomery, AL 36124, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church for Children at Christmas, 11450 AL Hwy. 33, Moulton, AL 35650, Hospice of the Valley in Decatur or Southern Care Hospice of Cullman.
