Obituary

Mr. John Homer Whitfield, 95, of Florence, passed away Monday, Feb. 15, 2010, at El Reposo Nursing Facility.
Homer was a member of Weeden Heights Methodist Church for 50 years. He served on building committee, president of Methodist Mens' Club and was a member of carpenter's local No. 109 for 59 years, where he served as an officer. He was an avid Alabama football fan and Braves baseball fan. His favorite pasttime was fishing. Homer was a devoted, loving family man. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. Also, he enjoyed having fish frys for friends and family.
Homer was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Allie Whitfield; wife, Gladys Adams Whitfield; two brothers; seven sisters; two nieces; and eight nephews.
He is survived by daughters, Kathy Whitfield McNatt, Greenhill, Deborah Willis (Johnnie), Town Creek; grandchildren, Casey Carnes, Nora Beasley (Terry); Danielle McNatt Coan (Wesley), Paul Willis (Lupe) and Jason Willis; one great-granddaughter; two stepgreat-granddaughters; a host of nieces and nephews; and a special pet, Lucy.
The family received friends Wednesday at Elkins Funeral Home, Florence. A chapel service will be at 11 a.m. today, with Brother Randy Burbank officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Tree Cemetery, Hackleburg.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at El Reposo, Hospice of Tennessee Valley and staff, Dr. Joiner, the nursing staff second-floor west at ECM, and special friends, Oather and Virginia Harmon.
