Mrs. Iola Elizabeth Lawson Shelton, age 79, of Florence passed away Friday, September 5, 2008 after an extended illness.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, September 7, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at North Wood United Methodist Church. The Rev. Peter Hawker will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 p.m. until service time.
Mrs. Shelton was born in Florence and was preceded in death by her parents Beaumont and Ruby Howard Lawson. She was a retired teacher and taught fourth grade at Gilbert School and later substituted at Bradshaw High School. She received a Bachelor''s degree from Florence State Teachers College and a Masters in Education degree from Florence State University. She cared about her students and the community through her volunteer work in several professional and civic organizations.
She was a member of North Wood Methodist Church and thoroughly enjoyed her membership in the Homebuilder''s Sunday School Class. For many years she enjoyed playing bridge with friends.
Mrs. Shelton is survived by her husband of 60 years, William Glenn Shelton, and her son, Dr. Beaumont Lawson Shelton, and his wife, Sheila, Florence.
