Mr. Iris Spencer "Peg" Thigpen, 95, of Rogersville, passed away Sunday, February 07, 2010 with his family by his side. The visitation will be Monday evening from 6-9 at Elkins East Chapel. He will lie in state, Tuesday, from 1-2 at Springfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The funeral service will begin at 2 officiated by Bro. Kenny Morgan. Burial will follow in Springfield Cemetery.
Mr. Thigpen graduated Lexington High School class of 1932. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also enjoyed fellowship with his church family and friends. "Mr. Peg" loved gardening and delivering the bounty of his labor to all in his community. He also enjoyed playing cards with his friends. Iris was a retired farmer and carpenter. He served as session clerk for 53 years for the Springfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he was a member for over 83 years and a longtime elder.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Verta Thigpen; brothers, Isis "Smutt" Thigpen, and Gaylon Thigpen; sisters, Eloise Hill, and Elora Phillips.
He is survived by his daughters Patty and Larry Lucas, of Rogersville, AL, and Joan and Joe Meyer, of Florence, AL; grandchildren, Stephanie and Brent Moran, of Elkmont, AL, Krystal Thomas, of Rogersville, AL, Randy and Susan Meyer, of Killen, AL, and Rena and Stephen Busby, of Central, AL; great grandchildren, Nathan Moran and Hannah Moran, of Elkmont, AL, and Nathan Rich, of Central, AL; numerous nieces, nephews and special friends.
His family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Mike Webb, Dr. Danny Martin, and ECM 6th floor Pallative Care nurses; and thanks for all the prayers and acts of kindness from family and friends.
