James Hudson Covington, 91, of Rogersville, passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at the Limestone Health Facility in Athens.
The funeral service will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Rogersville Church of Christ. Wendell Gann and Alex Bayes will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Civitan Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Mr. Covington served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He loved his country, his church, his community, his Alabama football team and was a charter member of the original Rogersville Volunteer Fire Department. He had been honored for his civic work by being chosen Grand Marshal of a Rogersville Christmas parade.
He was a lifelong member of the Rogersville Church of Christ, where he was instrumental in the growth of the church by providing assistance with building projects and numerous other programs. His many talents including woodworking and coin collecting and he enjoyed using his engineering skills to help others solve problems. He enjoyed a 60 year membership in the Rogersville Civitan Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Ada Covington, his wife of 20 years, Flora Howard Covington, a brother Robert Covington, and his wife of 25 years, Ostelene Comer Covington
He is survived by daughters Becky Childers and her husband David, Rogersville, and Judy Lamon and her husband Grady, Northport, Alabama; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Members of the Rogersville Civitan Club will serve as pallbearers.
The family would like to thank Tom Thompson his special care and concern, the staffs of the Limestone Health Facility and the Rogersville Senior Center.
