Obituary

Jack Powell, age 79, passed away on Sunday October 26, 2008 at Eliza Coffee Hospital.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday October 29, 2008 at 10 am at Elkins Funeral Home chapel with burial to follow at Greenview Cemetery. Bro. Henry Melton and Rodney Bridges will officiate. The family will receive friends on Tuesday October 28, from 6 pm until 9 pm at the funeral home.
Mr. Powell served his country in the U. S. Navy from 1946 until he was honorably discharged in 1950. He was retired from the U.S. Postal service after 30 years. Mr. Powell served as Postmaster for the city of Red Bay, Alabama. He was one of the founding fathers of the "Little Church" and a member of Faith Church where he worshipped and loved the Lord with all his heart. Mr. Powell loved to walk. He loved to play with his Dog, Tad beau and loved to watch football.
Mr. Powell is preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Annie Powell, three brothers, Grady Powell, Homer Powell, and Luther Powell, and one sister, Estelle Powell.
Mr. Powell is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Burcham Powell; his children, Mitzi Vergenz and husband Bob, Susan Powell, Mike Powell and wife Laura, and Patti Schack and husband Tony; two sisters, Marie P. Wright and Farie Croft; grandchildren, Peter Vergenz, Gina Vergenz, Steven Vergenz, Timothy Vergenz, Michael Powell, Draye Schack, Hannah Schack, Emilie Powell, and Emily Hahn; and numerous nieces.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Peter Vergenz, Steven Vergenz, Tim Vergenz, Draye Schack, Michael Powell, and his nephew, Chuck Wright. Honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Henderson, Luke Richie, Mike Nash, Tommy James, and Bill Powell.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Stanley Clarke, Dr. Danny Martin, Keller Home Health and Hospice, and especially to Machelle Williams, Leah Shebart, Olivia Stults, and Bob and Edie Broadfoot.
