Obituary

The family of James Eskell Powers Jr., of Muscle Shoals announce that he went home to be with the Lord on February 3, 2026. Mr. Powers also fondly known as "Bo", was born on September 1, 1936, in Birmingham, AL to Ruby Ramsey Powers and James Eskell Powers Sr., both of whom preceded him in death.

Raised in East Lake, "Bo" attended Barrett Grammar School, then Woodlawn High School where he excelled in football, was football team captain and received First Team All-State honors. Upon graduation, he served 8 years in the Navy Reserves.

A man of strong faith, Mr. Powers began his relationship with the Lord as a child and member of Ruhama Baptist Church in Birmingham. At the time of his passing, Mr. Powers was a devoted servant of Highland Park Baptist Church in Muscle Shoals, AL and was an active member of John Anderson's Men's Sunday School Class.

Mr. Powers professional career began at Southern Bell Telephone Company (which later became Bell South), as a lineman. Over 32 years Mr. Powers progressed through the ranks and at the time of his retirement was District Manager in Mobile, AL. His affiliations include Kiwanis Club, Civitan Club, Lions Club and Telephone Pioneers of Americas.

After his retirement Mr. Powers moved to Muscle Shoals where he resided for more than 30 years enjoying his time on the Tennessee River with his wife, Martha, and taking cruises to various destinations any chance, he could. A loving father, stepfather, grandfather, and great grandfather he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and SEC football, especially The Alabama Crimson Tide. But most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends spreading joy and laughter.

Mr. Powers was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Dean Powers; parents, James Powers Sr. and Ruby Ramsey Powers, an infant brother; and his son, James Richard Powers. He is survived by his stepson, Dean Murray (Karen) of Elkmont; grand-daughters, Kristen Pierce (Vince), Laura Franks (Jeffery), Brionna Stricklin, Abigail Stricklin, David Toone, Randy Toone (Sarah); eight great grandchildren, Ayden Lowry, Kinsley Murray, Brooklyn Pierce, Lawson Pierce, Savannah Barentine (Michael), Emory Toone, and Sadie Toone.

Funeral services will be held at Elkins Funeral Home in Florence on Thursday, February 5 beginning at 11am with internment at Forest Hills Cemetery in Birmingham, AL. The family will receive visitors an hour prior to the service on Thursday. The graveside portion of services will be private, family only.
