James Aralee Snoddy June 18, 1929-October 19, 2011
James A. Snoddy, 82, of Rogersville, formally of Huntsville passed away peacefully on October 19, 2011. He was born June 18, 1929 in Rogersville, Alabama to parents Clyde Patrick and Vernon Pricilla Snoddy, of Rogersville. Mr. Snoddy was a graduate of Lauderdale County High School, attended the University of Alabama, Florence State University and University of Alabama in Huntsville. He was an active member of the varsity football team and excelled in many athletic sports. Mr. Snoddy was a senior flight engineer in the US Air Force. He served during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Snoddy started his 45 year career at NASA in 1958, serving under Dr. Wernher von Braun''s Apollo-Saturn 5 Launch Vehicle team at Marshall Space Flight Center during the infancy of the nation''s space program. He was a key player in the development of Apollo-Saturn 5, Lunar Landing Skylab, Space Shuttle Programs including the SRB. His first jobs included Mercury-Gemini program. He received many awards and recommendations for his contributions to the space program from the Wernher von Braun''s team. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years and high school sweetheart, Alma Crymes Snoddy of Rogersville; son, James A. "Bo" Snoddy. Mr. Snoddy is survived by his daughters, Jean Anne Chandler of Huntsville and Amy Holdbrooks (Heath) of Decatur; sisters, Frances Ingrum, Sarah Alexander, Shirley Smith, and Doris Bates; brothers, Clyde Snoddy and David Snoddy; four grandchildren, Jason K. Chandler (Alexis), Heath Pace Holdbrooks, James Paul Holdbrooks, and Lillian Rebekah Holdbrooks. Visitation will be Saturday, October, 22, 2011, from 11AM to 1PM, at Rogersville United Methodist Church. Services will follow at 1PM with Rev. Rod Morgan and Rev. J.W. Vickers. Burial will be at Civitan Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Terry Ingram, Jeff Ingram, Clyde Alexander, Bobby Smith, Jamey Cosby, Donald Evans, and Nathan "Shorty" Bates. Honorary pallbearers will be G.D. Ingram, Bobby Hill, Jack Manry, Bryan Butler, Delbert Waddell, and Billy Snoddy.
