Jerry Glen Thompson was born September 27, 1934 in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee and died October 30, 2009 at home in Florence, Alabama after an extended illness.
The family will receive friends at Elkins Funeral Home on Monday from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Chris Underwood will officiate. Burial will follow in Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens.
Jerry was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a graduate of the U.S. Army Radio School at Ft. Slocum, N.Y. He managed the Ft. Greely Alaska station in 1959.
He will be remembered as a local sports broadcaster for area high school and UNA Lions teams in affiliation with WVNA radio. Prior to retirement, he managed radio station WKSR in Pulaski, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by parents Iva and Andrew Thompson, and brothers Ancil, Burl and Bill.
His survivors include his wife of 53 years, Angela; daughters Lisa Pyle and husband Mark, Muscle Shoals, Jan Blazier and husband Steve, Florence, and Christy Rogers, Decatur; a son, Bradford Thompson and wife Leah, Florence; granddaughters, Sophia and Helen Thompson and Madison Bailey; grandsons Eric and Alec Mansell, Jacob Thompson and Justin Rogers; sisters-in-law, Lochiel Thompson, Lawrenceburg, and Jerry Lou Roberts, Birmingham; brothers-in-law, John Paul Poole and wife Sandra, Florence, and Bob Poole, Houston, Texas.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and members of the Rivertown coffee group. Honorary pallbearers will be members of his Sunday school class led by Bill Hyde at Highland Baptist Church.
