Funeral for Jewell McLain Smith, 91, of Decatur will be Friday, April 24, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bobby Green, Rev. Sandra Locke-Godbey and Rev. Sherry Harris officiating and Ridout's Brown-Service directing. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from noon to 2 p.m. at the church. Mrs. Smith, who died Tuesday, April 21, 2009, was born Dec. 30, 1917, in Mount Hope to Paul D. McLain and Vivian McCarver McLain. She was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. She worked for the Hosiery Mill, Fuller's Grocery and volunteered at Decatur General Hospital, CCC and Volunteer Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Smith Sr.; one son, John J. Smith Jr.; and one sister, Mary Stephenson. Survivors include three daughters, Jan Yount (Maben) and Ann Hopper, both of Decatur, and Vivian Phelps (Jimmy) of Rockwell, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Jason Yount (Brooke) of Birmingham, Amanda Yount of Decatur, Laura Hopper of Tuscaloosa, Pvt. Matt Hopper of Fort Benning, Ga., Jon Hopper (Lesia) of Decatur, Jeff Phelps (Koren) of Jacksonville, Fla., and Christy Thompson (Kevin) of Rockwell, N.C.; nine great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Thompson and Cody Thompson, both of Rockwell, N.C., Taylor Grizzard, Amari Woods, Lara Stewart, Kobey Stewart and Preston Heath, all of Decatur, Brandon Moore of Jacksonville, Fla., and Amanda Moore of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one sister, Glenna Dee Jones of Decatur; nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be grandsons and family friend, Sam Hammond.
