OBITUARY FOR MR. JOHN EDWARD "JOHNNY" JOHNSTON
The funeral service for Mr. John E. "Johnny" Johnston will be Sunday, January 25, 2009 at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Elkins Funeral Home, Florence. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5-8 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Pettus Cemetery.
Mr. Johnston passed away Friday, January 23, 2009 at ECM Hospital at the age of 83. He was a retired teacher, coach and administrator who worked for the Lauderdale County School System for 39 years. Mr. Johnston received a Purple Heart for service to his country in WWII and was a member of the American Legion. He was a member of the Shoals Quarterback Club, inaugural class of the Lauderdale County Sports Hall of Fame, and was a member of the Methodist Church.
Mr. Johnston was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Taylor Johnston; parents, W. T. (Willie) and Sarah Ella Johnston; his brother, Carson Johnston; his sisters, Edith Hammond, Geneva Joiner and Gertrude Childers.
He is survived by his daughter, Johnita Romine and husband Michael; grandchildren, Baylee Marie Romine and Johnston Michael Romine; numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Johnston''s nephews will serve as pallbearers. Honorary bearers will be former players from Rogers High School.
