John L. Smith, 78 of Grassy, Alabama, passed away on April 16, 2026.

John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Kathy; his son, Gile (Shayla); and his cherished grandchildren, Sloan Presleigh, and Nash Pierce. He was preceded in death by his parents, Corinne and Leo Smith.

Originally from South Dakota, John dedicated 37 years of his life to service in both the United States Army and the Civil Service, retiring with the rank of Army Major. He continued his commitment through a distinguished career in civil service, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues and community alike.

Beyond his professional life, John was a talented drafter and woodworker, known for his craftsmanship and attention to detail. He found great joy in sharing these skills with his son, creating lasting memories through their time spent together. 

Of all his accomplishments, John considered his greatest to be his role as a grandfather. He took immense pride in Sloan and Nash, and his love was evident in every moment they shared.

John will be remembered for his dedication, quiet strength, and deep love for his family. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the family he cherished.
