Joseph H. Morley, 96, of Florence, passed away Sunday, 13 December 2009, after a brief illness while travelling with his children in Barbados. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Episcopal Church and the service will be at 2:00 P.M. Mr. Morley was born in Johnstown, PA, in 1913. Once called the "Boy Wonder" of Johnstown for his singing ability, he participated on the swimming team and basketball team and was also salutatorian of his school. While attending the University of Pittsburgh he sang in the university quartet on the world's first commercial radio station, KDKA, as part of the Jock Sutherland weekly football report; and was the interfraternity chess champion. After graduating in the depths of the Great Depression, he worked as an accountant with Bethlehem Steel and saved enough to travel to Europe in 1938. Then he served with distinction in World War II and came south to work for the TVA. He met his future wife, Phyllis, the public health nurse at TVA Muscle Shoals, at the Jones boarding house in Florence. He became a Certified Public Accountant and retired as the Chemical Accounting Branch Chief of TVA. Joe and Phyllis enjoyed bridge club with their close friends. Ever curious, they travelled on numerous freighters to strange and fascinating ports around the world and brought back great stories to share. They enjoyed Elderhostel''s worldwide and in later years travelled on cruise ships. Once Phyllis passed away, Joe continued enjoying cruises with his children. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Anna and Winnie, and brother William. He is survived by his children Barbara and Donald. Special thanks are due to his caregivers, who gave much of themselves, and his talented friends who enriched his life. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Florence Lauderdale Public Library and the American Parkinson Disease Association. Elkins Funeral Home is assisting the family.
