Larry Don Sledge, age 63, died at his home in Rogersville, Alabama on September 13, 2011. His funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 18 at Elkins East Chapel, with Reverend Pat Driskell officiating the service and Reverend George Peelen delivering the eulogy. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 2:00 P.M., with the funeral service at 2:00. Burial will follow at Butler Cemetery at Blue Water Creek. Larry Don was a member of Elgin United Methodist Church. He graduated from the University of Alabama and was employed at NASA. When Larry Don was twenty-six years old he sustained a severe traumatic brain injury, which left his intellect, personality and quick wit intact and his physical body impaired. But as his body broke down, his spirit soared. Larry Don had a profound effect on the lives of all who knew him. Being around him made us want to be better people and our lives were greatly enriched by his presence. His love for life, keen sense of humor, and profound faith helped keep our lives in perspective. He was preceded in death by his parents, C. A. and Betty Sledge. Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Myra and Gordon Belue and their children Gabriel, Audra and Mitchell. Larry Don was surrounded by the love of numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, as well as special caregivers Janie Lunsford and Deanna Frevold. Pall bearers for Larry Don will be UA college roommates: Frank Cagle, Tom Cosby, Charles Crow, Shalon Sledge, Gerald Tucker and David Warren.
