Mrs. Marjorie Dobson Norton, age 76, of Florence, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2010 after a valiant battle with lymphoma.
The funeral service will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Florence with the Rev. Mike Pope officiating. Burial will follow in Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in the atrium of the church from 12:30-2:00 p.m. Elkins Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Mrs. Norton was a graduate of Florence State Teachers College and had taught in the Sheffield and Auburn, Alabama City School systems. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and an avid Auburn fan. She enjoyed her part-time work at the Florence Utility Department. As lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, she was active in many of its activities and many civic affairs as well.
She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph B. Dobson, Jr. and Mildred McCaig Dobson, and a brother, J.B. Dobson, III.
Mrs. Norton is survived by her husband of 57 years, Bert Norton ; daughters, Charlotte Norton Sandlin and husband B.J., Carbon Hill, AL, Rebecca Norton Mardis and husband Blaine, Decatur, Katherine Norton Granberry, Hoover, AL; and a son, Joseph Brinkley Norton, Huntsville, AL; grandchildren, Wesley Sandlin, Ashley Mardis, Katie Leigh Mardis, Mary Katherine Granberry and Laura Granberry; niece, Virginia Dobson Rigsby, Signal Mountain, TN; sister-in-law, Janice G. Sandlin, Florence; brother-in-law, Mack Norton, Rainbow City, AL; sister-in-law Betty Darby, Florence. Marjorie will be missed by many friends including weekly bridge partners, Joe and Alice Dill, members of the Ferguson Sunday School Class and the members of the "Good Ol'' Girls." Pallbearers will be Wesley Sandlin, Joe Dill, Al Ford, Jimmy Bragwell, Hank Friday and Joe Thomas.
The family offers special thanks to Drs. David Hollis, Edsel Holden III, Patrick Daugherty, Hemant Patel, and Karl Hagler and to the CCU staff at ECM Hospital.
