Obituary

On March 24, 2011; Our Heavenly Father called home his faithful servant Marvin A. Wilson, 83, of Florence, Alabama. The family will receive friends on March 25, 2011 from noon to 2:00 p.m., with funeral services starting at 2:00 p.m. at Elkins Funeral Home, Florence, Alabama. Burial, with military honors, will follow at the Pettus Cemetery in Lexington, Alabama. Marvin is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Frances Metcalf Wilson; his son, Art Wilson and wife Kim Wilson of Florence; his daughters Cindy Wilson of Florence; Lauren Wilson and husband Andy Fitch of Tuscaloosa; his sister, Ellen Johnson of Florence; and his six precious grandchildren, Jency Wilson, Wilson Carr, Auty Wilson, Kacy Wilson, Margaret Carr, and Laney Wilson; as well as many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends. Marvin''s parents, Robert Odus Wilson and Mary Pettus Wilson, along with his brothers, Paul Harris Wilson, Ralph Wilson, Coye Wilson, Bill Wilson, Clyde Norris Wilson, and sister Christine Higginbotham welcomed him to heaven. Marvin was a renaissance man with many varied interests and pursuits. He was a Mason, a Shriner, and a Farmer, but he was most well known as a lawyer, helping hundreds of people, and serving as the County Attorney for the Lauderdale County Commission for over 30 years. During this time he was heavily involved in all aspects of the growth of Lauderdale County, including the building of the current County Court House. He was born in Lexington, Alabama where he attended Lexington School. He graduated from Coffee High School, and worked as a disc jockey in various radio stations across the south, including WJOI in Florence and WSIX in Nashville as he worked his way through Florence State Teachers College and Cumberland School of Law in Lebanon, Tennessee. He was drafted into the Army twice. In 1945 he served as a Sergeant and in 1950 he served as a First Lieutenant. His various assignments while in the service included working in Army intelligence. While stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas he worked on top secret projects involving the testing of V-2 missiles and had many personal contacts with Wernher von Braun at White Sands, New Mexico. With his partner James Joiner, he helped to found Tune Publishing. As a proud Veteran, he devoted much of his life to the American Legion, serving as State Judge Advocate General as well as Commander for the Florence Post 11. Marvin loved his family, his country and God. Pallbearers will be: Auty Wilson, John Higginbotham, Tommy Higginbotham, Thomas Wilson, Donnie Wilson, Bobby Wilson, Shawn Ligon and Cameron Olive. Honorary pallbearers will be: Wilson Carr, Keith Davis, Clint Wilson, James Wilson, Judge Will Duncan, Dr. Ricky Irons, Larry Reid, Chad Holder, Bill Wright, John Dupuis, James Hall and the men''s Sunday School Class at Broadway Baptist Church. The family gives a special thank you to Marvin''s dear niece Mary Ligon and her husband AL Ligon, and the members of the Broadway Baptist Church for their support, help and devotion to the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Broadway Baptist Church Wee Care Daycare, or a charity of your choice.
