Mattie MaeJean Hughes, age 85, of  Killen, AL passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at Lauderdale Christian Nursing Home after an extended illness, surrounded by family and friends.

Visitation will be Monday, June 19, 2023, from 10 AM to 1 PM at Elkins East Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 1 PM in the chapel with Bro. Ronny Jones officiating. Burial will be at Butler Cemetery.

MaeJean was a graduate of Lexington High School. She retired from Browns Ferry, drove a school bus in Lauderdale County, and worked for Dr. Todd Chastain's Dental Office. She was a faithful member at Center Star Baptist Church where she taught children's church and Bible classes, and spent her time ministering to others. MaeJean loved to entertain and sing, and wrote poems and songs. She dearly loved spending time with her family and friends. She was caring, selfless, and loved helping others.

MaeJean was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill Hughes; parents, Bennie W. Butler and Mary Lela Stutts; brothers, Kenneth Butler, W.P. Butler, Charles Butler, Wayne Butler, and Lynn Butler; sisters, Edith Butler, Agnes Mason, and Darlene Carriveau; granddaughter, Kristin Holden.

She is survived by her daughters, Rhonda Holden and Ronette Williams (Mike); grandchildren, Dana Johnson (Johnathan), Jamie Vanlandingham (Christopher), Bradley Williams (Hailey), and Bethany Williams (Cody); great-grandchildren, Logan, Sara, Adeline, Connor, Rylan, Hayden, and Everleigh; and twin sister Nadean Lemay (Hulet).

Pall bearers will be Matt Forsythe, Bart Bradley, Bradley Williams, Curtis Lemay, Russell Steen, and Bryon Butler.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the nurses and staff at Lauderdale Christian Nursing Home, Cedar View Assisted Living, and to Compassus Hospice who took great care of her and were a great comfort to us all.
