Obituary

Maurice Feulner Cox age 88 of Florence, passed away on Thursday April 3, 2014. Visitation will be Sunday April 6, 2014, at Elkins Funeral Home of Florence from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM. Service to follow at 2:00 PM in the chapel with Rev. Sam Hardie officiating. Burial will be at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens.

Maurice was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Joyce Chambliss Cox and his daughter, Laurie Cox Sloan.

He is survived by his daughter, Lynn Cox and granddaughter Lauren Sloan.

Mr. Cox was born December 13, 1925 in Selma, Alabama. In 1942 he graduated from Lamar County High School in Vernon, Alabama. Maurice served in the United States Navy from 1942-46 leaving with the rank of Ensign. While serving overseas he received an appointment to the Navy''s Officers College Training Program. During this time he attended Southwest Louisiana University, Northwestern University and Harvard University. In 1948 he became a graduate of the University of Alabama where he majored in accounting and received a BS degree in Commerce and Business Administration. He obtained his Alabama CPA certificate in 1952. He served as the accounting manager for Southern Sash of Sheffield from 1954 to 1979 and returned to private practice as a CPA in Florence from 1983 through 2012.

Maurice was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His faith was as important to him as his family and he was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for 63 years. He was a founding member and treasure at Turtle Point Country Club, where he enjoyed golfing. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and traveling to watch baseball games at many different stadiums. He was a supporter of the University of Alabama, a Crimson Tide football fan and he and Joyce enjoyed many adventures as they traveled extensively across the United States and Europe with family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Building Fund at the First United Methodist Church.
