Mrs. Maxine Ponder Irons, 79, of Killen, passed away at her home Sunday, August 7, 2011.
The visitation will be Thursday beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Elkins Funeral Home, Florence. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel. Bro. Ronny Jones will officiate. Burial will follow in Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Irons did secretarial work most of her life. She worked for the Teamsters and the Town of Killen. She always helped others, taking people in and treating them like family. She gave her life to Christ at age 78 and was baptized at First Baptist Church, Center Star. She was preceded in death by her loving husband William Paul Irons.
She is survived by a son Richard W. Ponder and wife Sherri of Florence; daughters Shelia L. Jones of Pennsylvania and Pamela R. Mauldin of Birmingham; stepson Phillip Paul Irons and wife Velma of Florence; grandchildren Tracy Austin, Christopher Ponder, Melissa, Maria, Andrea and Carlie Robertson, and Nicole Ponder; great-grandchildren Steven and Jasmine Austin; brother Ralph B. Murphy of Missouri; sister Alene Stevenson of Florence. Her special pet poodle Susie died just months before her.
Pallbearers will be Donny Hines, Bill Hines, Chris Ponder and other friends and family. Her loving neighbors in the Mountain Brook Subdivision are invited to be honorary pallbearers.
The family would like to thank Hospice of the Shoals, Nicole Landry, Cynthia Rollins and Kay Ray. We greatly appreciate the care given to her by Doris Davis, Cindy Daily and Carolyn Kyle.
