Graveside service for Mildred Johnson Nelson, 96, of Decatur will be Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007, at 2:30 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery with Dr. Frances Moss officiating and Ridout's BrownService Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Mrs. Nelson, who died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007, at Summerford Nursing Home, was born May 17, 1911, in Shelby County to Rufus Clark Johnson and Margaret Lola McAnnally Johnson. She was a graduate of Cullman County High School and was also a graduate of Athens State College in 1935. She enjoyed a teaching career until her retirement in 1973. She taught math and science at Belgreen, Mount Hope, Austinville, Austin High School and West Morgan High School. Mrs. Nelson was a volunteer at the Cook's Natural Science Museum. She had been a member of Austinville United Methodist Church since 1950. Her husband, Roger P. Nelson; and her daughter, Sandra N. Atchley, preceded her in death. Survivors include four grandchildren, Dr. David Allen Atchley of Donaldsonville, Ga., Kelly Derek Atchley of Columbus, Ga., Ginger Carol Crosson of Columbus, Miss., and Carla Ann Gillette of Hartselle; son-in-law, Carl David Atchley of Decatur; and 11 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Memorials may be made to UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, Office of Community Affairs in Birmingham or to the charity of your choice
