Nadine Pickens Sullivan passed away Friday, December 25, 2009. She was 92. Funeral services will be on Tuesday December 29, 2009 at 2 pm in the chapel of Elkins Funeral Home in Florence. Burial will follow at Wesley''s Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be on that day from 1 pm until 2 pm at the funeral home.
Mrs. Sullivan was born in Florence September 10, 1917. In 1936 while a student at Florence State College, she married Fletcher Sullivan, joining in matrimony two of the oldest families in Lauderdale County. Mrs. Sullivan graduated with honors from Florence State College.
In 1940 Nadine taught at Waterloo High School. In 1942 she, her husband, and son moved to Jackson Road in North Florence.
She was a member of North Wood Methodist Church. She was a member of the Thursday Afternoon Study Club, Alabama Education Association and the Retired Teacher Association.
For several years she taught in the Central Elementary School and later at Brandon Elementary School for a total of 32 years. At 59 she retired, though she did social work into her eighties.
She is survived by her son, Owen Boyce Sullivan III of Fairview, NC, and her cousin Mary Alice Young of Oakland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Fletcher Sullivan.
