Obituary

Wanda Sue Butler Hurn, 84, of Elgin / Rogersville, AL passed away February 27, 2025 peacefully at home. She attended Springfield First Baptist Church where her parents were charter members. She loved the Lord, her husband of 67 years and her family and friends. No one came to her home that did not feel welcome. She met everyone with a beautiful smile. She loved to cook and bake and always made sure no one was hungry. Her love of baking and decorating cakes led her to work at Foodland in Elgin for several years, where she was the Deli Manager.

Wanda loved her dogs, Mickey and Minnie, and raising Boston Terrier puppies. She loved raising flowers. She had a green thumb and flowers flourished under her care. She could not wait for Springtime so she could start working in her flower beds. She also loved her antique dishes and rummaging through antique stores.

Her love of genealogy and local history meant she never met a stranger. No matter who you were she always wanted to know where you were from and who your parents were. Her love of history inspired the writing/publishing of the book "History of Elgin Crossroads & Nearbys". A work she was very proud of. She was also a member of the East Lauderdale Historical Society where she helped provide historical information that would be placed on historical markers in the area that would tell the local history for years to come.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, James Hurn, daughters, Beverly Hurn Henderson, Tammy Brown (Mark); Sister Brenda Trousdale (Bobby), grandchildren, Callie Holcombe (Jim), Julia Henderson (Ryan Zaleuski), Luke Brown, Kimberly Brown and Matthew Brown; Great-Grandchildren Mina Holcombe and soon to arrive Rebekah Holcombe.

Mrs. Hurn was preceded in death by her parents, Buford and Pearline Butler; and granddaughter Melaina Jill Brown.

The family would like to thank Amedysis Hospice for their loving care during this difficult time.

Services will be held at the Elkins East Chapel in Killen on Sunday, March 2 beginning at 1pm with Audie Bogus and Bobbie Walton officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Burial will immediately follow the service at Barnett Cemetery in Lexington.
