Olie Baxter Tillery, Jr., 81, of Florence, died Tuesday, December 29, 2009.
The service to remember his life will be Thursday at 12:00 p.m. at the Elkins East Chapel Funeral Home. Stan Dean and Charles Kretzer will officiate. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow in the Civitan Cemetery, Rogersville.
Olie served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He was a graduate of the Birmingham School of Law and had been a Birmingham Police Officer. He had been a member of the Alabama State Defense Force and the Chief of the Jefferson County Sheriff''s Reserve and Mounted Posse.
He was a member and a former Post Commander of American Legion Post # 11 and was a member of VFW Post 5140. He was a member of the Killen Church of Christ.
Olie was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Sayers, a daughter, Carol Tillery, and a brother, Pat Tillery.
He is survived by his wife Cynthia R. Tillery; daughters Gail Elizabeth Tillery, Cumming, GA, and Lois Richardson and husband Terry, Nolensville, TN; grandchildren Evan Tillery Richardson and Darby Jane Richardson; sisters Tommie Johnson, Birmingham, and Betty Pullin, Millbrook; nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Ty Ashley, Tim Ashley, Tim Pullin, Brian Romine, Jerry Dean, Bob Bedingfield, Ed English, and David Pullin. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Hester, Roy Ezell, June McGee, Willie Alexander, and elders of the Killen Church of Christ.
The family requests the omission of flowers and suggests memorials to the Killen Church of Christ Mission Fund, the Killen-Center Star Rescue Squad, Rolling Riders, 205 S. Seminary St., Florence 35630, and Hospice of the Shoals.
