O.V. LEDGEWOOD
Ottie Vernell Ledgewood, 87, of Florence passed away Friday, September 4, 2009 at Shoals Hospital following a brief illness.
The funeral service will be Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Florence. The Rev. Gary Formby will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in the atrium of the church beginning at 1:00 p.m. Elkins Funeral Home is assisting the family.
O.V. was born November 25, 1921 in Waterloo, Alabama. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he was a teacher for the Men''s Bible Class for many years. He retired from Alabama-Tennessee Natural Gas Company and then operated Ledgewood Janitorial Service for several years. He also worked in various positions at Northwest Alabama Regional Airport for 39 years before retiring in 2007.
He was a volunteer at the Habitat Restore in North Florence, a past president of the North Florence Kiwanis Club, and a member of Free and Accepted Masons. He was a graduate of Florence State Teachers College and enjoyed ballroom dancing and genealogy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi, parents Vernon and Allie, and brothers Garold and Weyman.
O.V. is survived by his son, Alan (Collins); daughters, Sandra Bruce (Bill) and Pam (Allan Reddick); grandsons Carter and John Ledgewood; granddaughter Kelly Bruce and great-granddaughter Jaela Metcalf; brothers Rueben (Ruth) and Horace (Vonnie); sister Villa, and sisters-in-law Johnnie Ledgewood and Gloria Ledgewood; nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Carter Ledgewood, John Ledgewood, Bill Bruce, Kevin Ledgewood, Anthony Ledgewood, Mark Almond, Rick Almond, and Billy Heatherly. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Torbert, John Leherter, Bob Bradley, Paul Evans, and members of the Men''s Bible Class of First United Methodist Church.
The family would like to thank Dr. Brian Cole, Dr. Felix Morris, and the doctors and nurses of Shoals Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or Shoals Habitat for Humanity.
