Obituary

Phillip John "P.J." Rhodes age 81 of the Oakland community died Monday, February 24, 2014 at his home. Friends and neighbors may visit with the family Wednesday, February 26 at a 2pm for a graveside service at New Hope Church of Christ cemetery with Carl Seigenthaler officiating. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

P.J. was born May 15, 1932. He was preceded in death by his parents; Norman and Bessie Irons Rhodes; brother, Douglas Rhodes; sisters Betty Faye Ticer and Evangeline Ticer.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years; Degloris Cummings Rhodes; daughters Sabrina Reed (Jimmy); Liz McIntryre (Jeff) and Sharon Rhodes (Chris); all of the Oakland community; Grandchildren Kevin Reed (Molly) of Florence, Courtney Lanier (Eric) of Oakland; Matt Austin (Kendra) of Grant, Derrick Austin (Brooke), Morgan Rhodes (fianc Jordan Bain) and Phillip Rhodes (fianc Breanna Hodges) all of Florence; Great grandchildren Reed and Andrew Walker, Wyatt and Luke Austin, all of whom were the delight of his heart. Sister; Mildred Marks of Florence. Sister-in Law; Carolyn Rhodes of Misawaka, IN. Several nieces and nephews.

P.J. attended Waterloo high School before going to work in Mishawaka, Ind. He was called for a tour of duty in the army during the Korean conflict, after which he graduated high school by earning his GED. He went to work at Stylon in 1953 and worked there 39 years, retiring from Monarch Tile (formerly Stylon). He was a member of New Hope Church of Christ.

P.J. and Degloris enjoyed hosting their family and friends for their annual 4th of July and Labor Day picnics/chicken stew on their farm for nearly 15 years before health problems forced them to stop.

P.J. raised cattle for 40 years until health issues caused him to quit in 2012. After retirement he was a one-man watch in his neighborhood. Everyone knew him as he drove around on his 4-wheeler or S-10 pickup from 5:30 a.m. till dusk.

The family expresses special thanks to Hospice of the Shoals and Elder Care Services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Research Hospital.
