A Memorial Mass for Robert "Bob" Brendan Carroll of Decatur will be offered on Friday, October 23, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Annunciation of the Lord Catholic Church with the Reverend Father Raymond J. Remke, Pastor, and the Reverend Father Joel Martin, O.S.B., of St. Bernard Abbey, concelebrating. Mr. Carroll died October 20, 2009, at Decatur General Hospital. He was born in Rochester, New York on February 10, 1924, the youngest of 13 children of Mary Teresa Schreiner Carroll and John George Carroll. He was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers; and three sisters. He is survived by Sister Paula Carroll, O.S.F., of Rochester, New York; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Bob grew up in Rochester, New York. He graduated from St. Francis Minor Seminary in Staten Island and attended Assumption College in Windsor, Ontario. During World War II, he nobly served his country in the United States Navy. He was recognized for his service with the American Theater Med>al, the European Theater Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal 1 Star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Victory Medal. Early in his career, he was a social worker in Connecticut. In the early 1970s, he moved to Decatur and worked as an insurance adjuster. He was a parishioner of Annunciation of the Lord Catholic Church serving as an usher and a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus St. Ann Council 3986 and a Fourth Degree member of the Father William V. Higgins Assembly in Decatur. Over the years, he made many friends, all of whom mourn his loss. Over the course of his life, Mr. Carroll maintained a strong commitment to his Catholic faith and remained a fervent believer in the power of prayer.
