Funeral for Robert Donald Childers Sr., 73, of Decatur will be Friday, May 16th at 11 a.m. at Parkview Baptist Church with Dr. Todd Evans officiating. Burial will be in Childers Cemetery in Eva. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 8 at Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home.
Mr. Childers, who died Monday, May 12, 2014, at Decatur Morgan Hospital, was born March 26, 1941, to Lem and Lola Childers. He joined the Army at the age of 18, and served in Korea for two years. He married his loving wife Shirley at the age of 21. They were married for 51 years and raised two children. Mr. Childers was very involved in the Dixie Youth Baseball organization. In 1984, he coached a team all the way to the World Series in Virginia, where they came in second place. He also coached various basketball and softball teams over the years. He worked at the Decatur Electric Department where he retired in 1994 after 32 years of service.
Mr. Childers was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, Omega Blagburn, Almae Bishop, Dwynell Burke and Jerry Childers.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; sons, Lynn (Brandi) and Don (Julie); grandchildren, Kaylee, Makena, Lila, Owen, Alaina, Boston, Sarah, Rebekah, Winston, John Robert and Chloe; brother, James Childers and sisters, Arlene Jurges, Louise Jones, Wanda Dickerson (Gary) and Georgia Howard (Butch).
Pallbearers will be former co-workers of the Decatur Electric Department.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either the building fund or preschool program at Parkview Baptist Church.
