Dr. Rhyne, who died, Thursday, April 7, 2011, was born October 7, 1931, in Perry County to Robert Henry Rhyne Sr. and Eunie Ellen Yelverton Rhyne. He was the first of six children in his family to attend college. He graduated from the University of Alabama and went to the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He served for two years in the U.S. Army Medical Corp., where he was stationed in Iran. He then moved to Moulton and practiced family medicine for 25 years. After closing his practice, he worked in occupational medicine at Solutia in Decatur. During this time as a practicing physician, he was the Medical Director of the Moulton Nursing Home and was a member of the American Medical Association, Southern Medical Association, Medical Association State of Alabama, Morgan County Medical Society and the Lawrence County Medical Society. One of his many achievements was being awarded the Alabama Junior Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Young Man of Alabama in 1965. He was a founder of and served as the Chairman of the Board of the Lawrence County Chapter of the United Way. While he was a member of the Jaycees, he organized and helped inoculate people throughout Lawrence County with free tetanus shots. He spent countless hours volunteering with the Lawrence County Alternative School where he taught chess. He also spent much of his time volunteering at the Lawrence County Public Library and Moulton Elementary School. Dr. Rhyne enjoyed playing golf, traveling to visit his children and grandchildren, genealogy and "playing" on the computer. Probably the thing he enjoyed most of all was Alabama football.
Dr. Rhyne was deeply loved by his family and will be missed by all those around him. He had such a positive and uplifting effect on everyone. He was truly a great man.
