Ruby Jean Campbell was born January 7, 1930, to Luther and Zora Lansdell Campbell in Lawrence County. She died April 9, 2010, at Lawrence Medical Center. She graduated from Hazelwood High School in 1948 and received her B.S., M.S. and Ed.S. degrees from The University of North Alabama, Florence. Ruby spent 43 years teaching in the public schools of Lawrence County. Teaching children was the love, joy and passion of her life. She spent 42 years of her career teaching in her beloved adopted community of Mount Hope. Ruby retired from teaching in 1995 and continued to substitute teach for the next 10 years. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Lawrence County Education Association, the Alabama Education Association, the National Education and their affiliated retiree organizations. She held several offices in the Delta Kappa Gamma and the Lawrence County Education Assocation. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Town Creek.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Thelma Ilene Campbell, Clara Campbell Parker, Glenn Campbell and Mabel Campbell Patterson; and brother, Luther Carl Campbell.
She is survived by three sisters, Ruth Campbell Ault (Kenneth) of Town Creek, Joyce Campbell Moore (Gary) of Montgomery and Marcilla Campbell Weems (Donald) of Decatur; two brothers, John Campbell (Joyce) and Ray Campbell of Town Creek; and a host of nieces, nephews, other close relatives and friends.
Conducting the funeral will be Rev. Neil Carter and Rev. Milton Burks. Visitation will be this evening from 5 to 7 at Elliott Funeral Home. The funeral will be at Providence Baptist Church on Sunday, April 11, 2010, at 2 p.m. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
Pallbearers are Roger Parker, Julian Hamilton, Jeff Campbell, Larry Patterson, Steve Sprinkle, Doug Shumake and Julian Bell.
