Sarah Darleen Means was born on May 31, 1928 in Huntsville Hospital. On October 31, 2018, her worldly life ended in Decatur, Alabama. She was married for over 72 years and taught in the Decatur school system for more than 30 years. Besides being a terrific cook and hostess, she loved to travel and also spent many hours with her stamps. She also enjoyed many summer hours boating, swimming, and skiing on the waters of the Tennessee Valley
She began her teaching career after her son and daughter began their elementary education. First, she was a substitute, but when an opportunity arose she became full time. This she continued while also attending then Athens College. Going to school part time and summers she attained her first degree, a Bachelors in 1962. Not satisfied with this, her education continued until she obtained two Masters, but stopped just short of her PhD.
Another interest was Bible study and she taught Sunday school classes for 25 years. Ever determined she found time to be with her husband Maurice, as he developed an association with Rising Sun Lodge 29 and the Cahaba Shrine. From that she became a Past Worthy Matron of Mary Lou Dancy Chapter 320, in Decatur as well as being a past Grand Marshal with the Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, State of Alabama.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Gussie and Joe Brazelton, and her brother Dewalt Brazelton.
Surviving her are husband William Maurice Means, son William (Bill) Maurice Means, Jr. (Louise); daughter Judy Ann McKelvey (John); three grandchildren, Colin McKelvey (Lori), Heather McKelvey, and Herndon Means; two great grandchildren, Mattie McKelvey and Annalise McKelvey.
Her funeral will be held at Southside Baptist Church, 709 9th Street S.E. Decatur, AL, 35601. Visitation will be on Saturday, November 3, from 11:00 am until 12:45. Funeral to follow at 1:00 with Ridout's-Brown Service directing. Burial will follow
in Roselawn Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Terry Means, Colin McKelvey, Kevin Means, Herndon Means, John Jones and Autry Russell. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to Southside Baptist Church. A special thank you to April Fielder for her loving care for the past two years.
