Silas B. Cross
Funeral for Silas B. Cross, 87, Huntsville, will be held in Lawrence County at First United Methodist Church in Moulton on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 2:00 pm. with Rev. Eric Brown officiating and Elliott Funeral Home directing. Visitation with the family will precede the services at 1:00 pm. The church is located at 14595 Market Street in Moulton. Burial will follow at Moulton Memory Gardens. Mr. Cross, who died Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Huntsville Hospital, was born November 28, 1923 in Lawrence County to Floyd Cross and Ethel Black Cross. Mr. Cross was an alumnus of Florence State College in 1947 where he received his B.S. degree, Peabody College in 1949 where he received his M. A. degree and Auburn University where he received his AA in education. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Coast Guard. He began his career in Lawrence County as a teacher, basketball coach and principal. He left Lawrence County after serving three terms as Superintendent of education. He moved his family to Huntsville in 1972 to serve as assistant superintendent and retired in 1983 as Title I Director. Survivors include his wife, Joyce; his daughter, Charisse and husband Greg Kragiel and their children Matt and Justice; daughter Karen and husband Sam Newsum and their children Joshua and Gracie; daughter Annette and husband Mike Tecza and their children Ben and Abby; sister, Ruth and husband Melvin Clem; several nieces and nephews.
