A Memorial Service for Thomas "Tom" James Whittle, 84, of Decatur, Alabama, will be on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Ridout's Brown-Service Funeral Home. The Rev. Dallas Culver, Pastor of Austinville United Methodist Church will be officiating and Ridout's Brown-Service directing. Interment will be at Roselawn Cemetery following the service.
Tom passed away Sunday, January 20, 2013 at Decatur Morgan Hospital. He was born December 18, 1928 in Camden, NJ to the late Thomas J Whittle and the late Helen Runyon Whittle. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret "Peggy" Zecca, Rose Callahan and Joan Devlin and his grandson, Jason Scott Whittle Hughes.
Tom is survived by his wife, Phyllis Rice Whittle, three sons, Stephen Leigh Whittle (Irene), Michael James Whittle (Jana) and Christopher Rice Whittle (Jana). He is also survived by four grandsons, Nicholas Whittle (Jo), Benjamin Whittle, Alexander Whittle and Zachary Whittle; four granddaughters, Stephanie Whittle, Christina Whittle Gentle (Zachary), Sarah Whittle Hamburg (Tristan) and Audrey Whittle; and two great-grandchildren, Annelyse Gentle and William "Liam" Gentle.
Tom served in the United States Air Force for nine years and is a WWII and Korean War Veteran. He graduated from Jacksonville State Teacher's College (Jacksonville State University) with a Bachelor's Degree in History and graduated from The University of Alabama, Huntsville, with a Master's Degree in Administrative Science. He taught History and Business Law at Talladega High School for four years and worked for the Department of the Army, US Army Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal for 23 years before retiring in 1985.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Austinville United Methodist Church where Tom was a member, or to The American Cancer Society, or The American Heart Association.
