Funeral for Unity Haidee "Granny" Owens Downs, 78, of Decatur will be Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Ridout''s Brown-Service Funeral Home with Rich Thompson of Hospice of the Valley officiating. Burial will be in Johnson Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 6 ot 9 at the funeral home. Mrs. Downs, who died Jan. 7, 2007, at her residence, was born Sept. 17, 1928, in Morgan County to Charles Oliver Owens and Nina Slate Owens. She was a Methodist. She retired from Dairy Queen on Moulton Street after 35 years of service and loved playing bingo every Saturday night at the American Legion in Hartselle. Her husband, Roy Lee Downs; and daughter, Diana Downs, preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Frank Downs and wife, Carol, and Ray Charles Downs, all of Decatur; four daughters, Mary Gibson and husband, Charles, of Decatur, Patricia Schaffer and husband, Mike, of Jasper, Dorris McCormick and husband, Steve, of Hartselle and Brenda Curtis and husband, Tim, of Moulton; one brother, Joseph Owens of Jasper; and three sisters, Barbara Johnson of Lincoln, Ala., Mary Nell Deese of Birmingham and Peppy S. King of Jasper. Mrs. Downs had 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Wayne Gibson, David Gibson, Christopher Smith, Anthony Smith, Jeremiah McCormick and Fredrick Downs.
