Obituary

Waylon David Cottles, 72, of Rogersville departed this life Monday, August 24, 2020, due to an accident at his home.

Waylon was a loving husband and father.  He was a member of 1st Cumberland Presbyterian Church Rogersville, Alabama.  He was a former owner of Cottles Motors.  He was retired Captain over the Security Services at TVA-Browns Ferry.  He also worked with FEMA Disaster Relief.  He was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the United States Marine Corps.  He served his country proudly with honors.  His hobbies included collecting and restoring antique cars.  Waylon loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.  He was an avid Alabama Football fan.  He was a 1966 graduate of Lexington High School.  He married his high school sweetheart, Trudy, September 24, 1968, they were married almost 52 years.

Waylon was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Ruby Cottles; brother, Gayther Cottles and his wife, Faye Cottles; sister in law, Charlotte Cottles; sister, Doris Jean Cottles; brother in laws, William Lee McKelvey and Randal Pettus.

Waylon is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Trudy Cottles; children, Phillip Cottles and Monica Hammond (Stephen); sisters, Mary Sobek (Irvin) and Lena Hill (Howard); brothers, Jerry Cottles (Kathy) and Roy Cottles (Patricia); sister in law, Stella Pettus; brothers in law, Robert Gamble (Sarah), William Young McKelvey, Jr. (Pam), Jimmy Whitman (Betty), and Marcus Roden (Eva); numerous nieces and nephews.  He enjoyed spending time with his fur babies, CoCo, Fluffy, and Lucky.  He loved his grandpups, Bama and Happy.

The Cottles family wants to thank the Athens Limestone Hospital and Emergency Services Teams and the Sheriff's Department.

A special thank you goes to Wayne and Sheree McConnell and Colby Brown for exceptional assistance after Waylon's accident and with grateful appreciation to our family and friends during these difficult times.

Graveside services will be at Barnett Cemetery Friday, August 28, 2020, 3 PM with Rev. Pat Driskell officiating.  Elkins East Chapel is assisting the family.  The family asks during this time that social distancing be respected and looks forward to hugs later.
