Mr. William Ray Belew, Sr., age 90, of Killen, passed away at his home Friday, December 10, 2010.
Visitation will be Sunday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Elkins Funeral Home, Florence. The funeral service will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the Elkins Funeral Home Chapel. Randy Baker will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Greenview Memorial Park.
Ray was a member of the Mars Hill Church of Christ and was preceded in death by his wife Kitty Belew. He had been a member of the Florence Downtown Lions Club for many years, held local and state offices and his hard work over time helped improve and restore the sight of many children and adults in Alabama.
He was a big supporter of UNA athletics as a member of the UNA Sportsman''s Club. He served in the US Navy aboard the LST 888 during World War II.
Ray is survived by his son Bill Belew and wife Gail of Nixa, Missouri; grandchildren Betsy Wyatt and husband Perry of Beaver Creek, Ohio, Ashton T. Belew of College Park, Maryland, and Loren Belew of Witchita, Kansas; great-grandchildren Wade and Hannah Wyatt; sister Jean B. Stokes of Decatur, Georgia; nephew Jack Belew and wife Pam of Florence.
Pallbearers will be Audie Mays, Perry Wyatt, Wade Wyatt, Barry Ray, Jason Wilbanks and Jack Barrier. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Armfield and members of the Florence Downtown Lions Club.
